Uttharakhand is also called as Dev bhoomi which literally translates to Land of the Gods. There are 4 holy shrines in Uttharakhand from where river Ganga and Yamuna emerges namely Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath which are also famous by the name of 4 dhams of Uttharakhand. A lot of Hindu devotees make their pilgrimage to these 4 temples every year in numbers.
The High-Altitude shrines remain shut for around 6 months every year, opening in summers (April/May) and closing with the onset of winter (October/November). It is believed that one should complete the char Dham yatra in a clockwise direction. Hence the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, proceeds further to Gangotri, onto Kedarnath and finally to Badrinath. The journey can be completed by road or by air (a helicopter service is available). Some devotees even do a 2 Dham yatra or a pilgrimage to two shrines – Kedarnath and Badrinath. The Char Dham Yatra is as divine as it is arduous but fulfils, the soul.
